Objectives:

Course overview and learning outcomes

This course establishes the underlying concepts and practical installation aspects of fire engineered smoke and heat exhaust ventilation systems (SHEVs) using simplified standard design methodologies. It will provide delegates with an understanding of both natural and mechanically ventilated systems in larger commercial or public-access buildings such as warehouses and, especially, covered shopping complexes; and enable them to audit fire risk assessments and provide appropriate advice.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the course, delegates will be able to:

• Identify the purpose and benefits of SHEVs in selected buildings

• Describe the key features of the simplified standard design methodology

• Evaluate a range of physical quantities associated with SHEVs

• Identify the limitations on the implementation of SHEVs

• Comment on the effectiveness of existing systems and provide appropriate advice

Who should attend:

Fire safety advisers or managers who:

• Audit fire risk assessments of buildings protected by SHEVs

• Have responsibility for advising on fire protection in such buildings.

Course Entry Criteria

Delegates should ideally possess a background in fire engineering, have some experience of Building Regulations and be comfortable with undertaking calculations involving algebraic formulas.

To provide delegates with an understanding of the principles and practice of both natural & mechanical ventilated systems to enable them to audit fire risk assessments and provide appropriate advice.

How is the course assessed and accredited?

Delegates' acquisition of knowledge will be formally assessed during the course and feedback will be given. A certificate is awarded upon successful completion of the course.

This course is aligned to National Occupational Standards FSA1, FSB3, FSB4 and FSB5, FSC1 and FSC2
